RSCC Wire & Cable, LLC (a member of the Marmon Group of Companies, a Berkshire-Hathaway Company) goes bravely where most wire & cable companies will not; harsh environments where electrical, physical and mechanical properties are key to the performance of critical end use items such as offshore oil rigs, nuclear power plants, transit cars and locomotives.
RSCC designs cables for these environments and is world renown for solving critical circuit problems in the Nuclear, Oil & Gas, and Rapid Transit industries. RSCC accomplishes this through high level chemical, mechanical and electrical engineering analysis aided by a series of innovative manufacturing processes. For any given customer problem, RSCC can deploy and experienced applications engineer backed by a strong research and development laboratory and technicians. RSCC has designed insulation and jacketing systems guaranteed to survive in a nuclear environment for 40 years without defect. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has now tasked RSCC to push these systems to 60 year life and RSCC has responded with cables tested and proven to meet this stringent requirement.
One of the keys to developing insulation and jacketing systems that will survive these environments is the innovative technology of irradiation cross-linking. Through the process of bombarding a specially formulated insulation and jacket material with a high energy electron beam, RSCC technicians can change the molecular structure of a polymer and change the material from a thermoplastic to a thermoset. Simply put, the material after going through the irradiation process will no longer melt and will become more durable and more chemical and fire resistant. In the harsh environments that RSCC supplies cable to, these performance characteristics are essential in insuring that critical circuits continue to operate under the most severe conditions. RSCC has the largest capability for irradiation cross-linking wire & cable in the world.
RSCC works directly with the original equipment manufacturers to design cable for use not only today, but for technologies that are developing now for use five, ten or possibly twenty years into the future. A prime example of this is RSCC’s metal clad down-hole sensing cable. This product is a critical element in the new technologies that accompany the drilling units of offshore oil rigs. As the drilling unit is deployed, the RSCC tubing encased cable is attached and it is designed to send back data on pressure, temperature and other geological information that is critical to determining where to drill and what potential obstacles may be in the way. These cables have to be manufactured in extremely long lengths (up to 60,000 feet continuous) and will have to live in a very high pressure atmosphere as well as a chemically caustic environment. RSCC uses a tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding process to manufacture a Stainless Steel and Incoloy encasement for these cables. Within these pressure tight tubes are various data cable and fiber optic cable constructions that are constantly evolving to transmit critical information to the sensing systems developed by such well completion system integrators as Schlumberger, Baker-Hughes, Halliburton, and Weatherford.
RSCC’s history goes back over 90 years and the business model has not changed much during that time. From the design of fire proof wiring for ships and trains in the 1920’s and 30’s to high performance wiring for aircraft in World War II to providing the coaxial cable over which the signal carrying the first pictures from the moon landing in 1969, RSCC has taken on the challenge of designing wire & cable products for the most demanding applications in the world. As the problems and challenges have become more diverse, so has RSCC in East Granby.
